A handbook of techniques for the preparation and interpretation of conventional cave surveys.

Everyone interested in caves will, at some time, use a survey for some purpose or other. This booklet provides a starting point for those who wish to make their own survey. It answers questions such as 'how do I start surveying?' and 'what equipment do I need?' ;and explains the techniques, and the problems that need to be overcome. All the common aspects of surveying are explained with the aid of clear diagrams - how to survey the centre line and passage detail; how to record the data; producing plans, elevations and sections; dealing with misclosures and mistakes; and so on. As well as a handbook for the beginner, it is intended that the book should act as an aide memoire for the experienced surveyor.
In the last few years the widespread availability of computers has simplified the process of data manipulation needed to produce a cave survey, but the surveyor still needs to understand how to record the data, and should be aware of the problems in drawing up an accurate survey.
